Insider Trading + Pledging Report

Everyone knows what Insider trading is. Whether the data is useful or not, will be judged in some future post where I run stats on the past data.

The stats have been run and BackTest results are finally published and can be found HERE.

For now, I present a monthly updated Insider trading summary report.

Some useful information regarding Insider Trading reported at NSE:

1. Pledge: This is the action of promoters to post their holdings as collateral. The shares do not change hands from pledger to pledgee (sort of like escrow), and there is no market transaction.

2. Pledge Invoke: This is the action by the pledgee (to whom the shares have been pledged) to ask for more shares from pledger (due to fall in share price) or ask for the pledged shares to be transferred to their account to make up for non payment of loan. In these cases, either the pledgor has to come up with cash as balance, or buy shares from market to keep up the collateral, or just allow pledge invocation. If the insider buys the shares from market, it will show up in the report as buys and pledge invoke separately. Or if they allow pledge invocation, the pledgee will usually sell shares in market to recover their loan (leads to selling, price dump, but doesn’t come up as an insider sell, just as pledge invoke). Thus insider trading data gets contaminated if such pledging activity is happening in the background. And invocation of pledge is usually is a bad thing.

3. Pledge Revoke: This is exactly the opposite of pledge invocation. But again contaminates the data. revocation of pledge is usually a good thing.

You can find the aggregated data for the buying, selling, pledging, invocation and revocation in links below:

QUARTERLY AGGREGATED DATA

Due to data contamination of pledging activities, and no dearth of securities with insider trading happening, I decontaminated the data by including scrips which are either pure buys or pure sells, with no pledging activity associated.
20 highest buys and sells have been shown in the images.
